Air Fryer Onion Rings Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 medium Vidalia onions (about 1 pound total)
- 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Cooking spray
Instructions:
- Prepare the Onions:
- Start by slicing off both ends of each onion. Peel the outer layer.
- Slice the onions into approximately 1/4 inch thick rings. Carefully separate the rings.
- Set Up Dipping Stations:
- Place all-purpose flour in a shallow bowl.
- In another bowl, beat the eggs until smooth.
- Combine the panko breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan, salt, paprika, onion powder, and garlic powder in a third bowl. Mix well to distribute the seasonings evenly.
- Coat the Onion Rings:
- Take one onion ring and first dip it into the flour, ensuring it’s lightly coated. Tap off any excess flour.
- Dip the floured ring into the beaten eggs, turning it to coat completely. Let the excess egg drip off.
- Finally, place the ring into the breadcrumb mixture. Coat thoroughly. Press the breadcrumbs onto the ring to ensure they stick.
- Set the coated onion ring aside on a wire rack or a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Repeat with the remaining onion rings.
- Prepare the Air Fryer:
- Spray the air fryer basket lightly with cooking spray (use an oil mister, not an aerosol spray to avoid damaging the air fryer).
- Cook the Onion Rings:
- Place the coated onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. You may need to work in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
- Spray the tops of the onion rings lightly with cooking spray.
- Set the air fryer to 375° F (190° C) and cook for 6-8 minutes, until golden and crispy.
- Serve:
- Remove the onion rings from the air fryer and place them on a plate lined with a paper towel to absorb any extra oil.
- Continue cooking the remaining batches.
Notes and Tips for Success:
- Size Matters: Smaller onions are preferable as they provide rings that are easier to handle and cook more uniformly.
- Onion Selection: Vidalia or other sweet onions are best for a mild, sweet flavor.
- Coating Technique: Take your time to thoroughly coat each ring. Ensure there is no visible flour after the egg dip as it can prevent the breadcrumbs from adhering properly.
- Utensil Use: Use separate forks for dipping the rings into the flour, eggs, and breadcrumb mixture. This helps in keeping your fingers clean and makes the process smoother.
- Breadcrumbs: Always opt for panko breadcrumbs for a lighter and crispier texture.
- Cheese: Don’t skip the Parmesan as it adds a depth of nutty flavor that enhances the overall taste of the onion rings.
